5 Myths About Entrepreneurship

Alright, alright, alright, it's time to tell some truths and bust some myths about entrepreneurship! Ready? Let's go!

We’ve found that there’s always a preconceived notion of entrepreneurship. That every entrepreneur gets up at 5 AM, meditates on their goals, manifests sales, spends 10 minutes journalling and sips on green tea. Well, we’re here to tell you, that’s just not true! So, let’s take a few minutes to bust some myths about entrepreneurship.

1. Entrepreneurs are ‘born’

One of the wilder notions about becoming an entrepreneur is that it’s genetic. Of course, if you were brought up in an environment where your parents or guardians pursued entrepreneurship, you may be more inclined to follow in their footsteps.

But that’s not what makes you an entrepreneur. It’s a choice. It’s a decision to take consistent action in a direction, no matter how imperfect. So, if you’ve got an idea and have taken even one small step to pursue it, you ARE an entrepreneur.

2. No purpose, no start date

This is one we really need to chat about! We can’t tell you how many times we’ve had people fret over the fact that they don’t know their purpose yet and therefore can’t start their entrepreneurial journey. We promise that’s not the case!

Your purpose is not something you ‘find’, it’s something you decide. And it’s something that can change! It’s easy to get bogged down in the mindset that once you choose something, you have to stick to it forever. It’s simply NOT true! You can change your mind once, twice, or even a thousand times, it’s up to you.

It’s all about starting. As you begin to experiment, change, pivot, the next part of your journey will become clearer.

3. You need a degree

Woah, woah, woah! Let’s back this one up real quick. Having a degree (specifically a business one) is not a prerequisite for becoming an entrepreneur. Some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs have no university or college educations – think Steve Jobs and Richard Branson.

Sometimes, it can even be easier without! Why, you may ask? Because it means you have less or no conditioned thinking. But remember, whatever your background, it’s okay to start wherever you are NOW!

4. It’s not good enough

Our community often comes to us with the concern that their ideas aren’t ‘good’ enough. Well, to that we say: ideas don’t make money, businesses do. No one else needs to understand it but if you’re passionate about your idea, you’ll put in the effort to make it work.

Also, we often find that you will start with what you know, and your idea will grow, evolve, and morph, with your customers’ input, into something that can create massive profit and massive purpose.

5. You can’t start without EVERYTHING

One of the most common myths about entrepreneurship is that you need all the resources and to have everything in a straight stripe before starting anything.

Lies, lies we tell you! It’s not about what you have, it’s about what you make of it. It’s not about resources, it’s about resourcefulness! Ask yourself “what can I do from where I am with what I already have?”.

So, have we helped to bust myths about entrepreneurship? We sure hope so!
