The Opportunity Cost of Your Desires: Maximize Goal-Setting

January.

January was the month of new, the month of fresh, the month of new beginnings and clean slates… but, was it really?

Listen carefully.

I heard a resounding: “Not really”. Lots of people around me seemed tired and as though they’d misplaced their compass. This often indicates a perfect time to realign, regroup and repurpose.

To kickstart finding True North, we hosted a “Setting Goals with Souls” meet up  at Future Females, using the Desire Map by Danielle La Porte. This workshop centered on gaining clarity and building resonance for 2018.

Because, let’s be honest, for a second.

What is goal-setting, really? Is it just another to-do for the endless list or is goal-setting something that actually nourishes you?

I don’t know about you, but I am choosing abundance for 2018. And, I plan to integrate goal-setting daily in order to reach this abundancy.

And, that’s part of the reason I love doing vision boards.

Your subconscious rules the driver’s seat (scary!), while your inner child gets to play and make decision – and, that inner child is usually spot on when it comes to guiding you with regards to what your soul truly desires.

From glue and pictures to calculated intentions with purpose – there is no right or wrong way to create a vision board and the evolution is as real as you dare it to be.

Thinking only happy thoughts is not sustainable. Nor is it practical. Good thoughts are great for a quick hit, but something far more powerful may be required to keep you going. As people, we change by the minute, by the hour and by the day. We are built for evolution and change and our goals should be, too. This is not about moving the goalposts all the time; it is about creating fluidity and direction.

I heard an interesting comparison that highlighted how our passions can turn into compulsions, which then become our downfall; as in, you become blinded by your desire.

Isn’t it interesting that the very thing that brings us together can sometimes tear us apart?

This got me thinking: when does passion become compulsion? At which stage do successful, passionate people quench their thirst to avoid intoxication? When is too much of a good thing, a bad thing?

Resolution is about resolve. We should be after the picture, guided by a checklist of to-do’s that aim to help you close gaps and reach your ultimate high.

We don’t buy a big houses only because we want one. We buy a big house because of the way it makes us feel. Maybe it feels safe. Maybe it feels impressive. What we are ultimately after, though, is the feeling. And, when we work from the premise of feeling, life become easier to navigate. If something does not fit into your desire of that feeling, you move away from it; which helps maintain boundaries and redefine focus.

Daring to feel is truly at the raw center of desire.

It means eliminating self-sabotage and any form of denial. It forces us to ground.

earth.

feel.

Your goals are relevant to where you are. They are relevant to your process in life and unique to you. Yes, you may share goals with someone else, but you are most likely driven by different desires. That is precisely why it is so important to set your own strategies.

Here are five ways that you can maximize goal-setting to meet your desires

Buddy up! Some things in life are easier to navigate when you doing them with someone who is as passionate as you. Reach into your network to find someone writing the same chapter as you for this desire.

Alignment: What’s the point of goals? For me it is matching my “inside” desires with my “outside” desires. Aligning them and working towards something bigger than myself. When you are feeling disconnected from your fellow human, usually it is a sign we need to reconnect with ourselves too. Don’t you find it interesting that when you wake up on the wrong side of the bed… everything goes wrong? We all need inner attunement.

Truth. What is the truth? My papi always said: “There are 3 sides to every story”. Your truth, my truth and then the actual hard facts of the truth. When setting your goals, you should be focusing on your truth, your vision, you capabilities your desires and passions.

Play. Don’t over think. Play, DANCE, turn up the music, we are often more fearful of our joy than our pain. Being vulnerable in our joy is sometimes harder than being vulnerable in our pain. This was a revelation for me. Now I try and embrace my joy.

Adjust: Goals are not static things, they grow and evolve as you do. Be fluid in our goal setting so that your goals are growing with you.  Set yourself up for success.

Lastly, Opportunity Cost: There is always going to be an opportunity cost for your goals. You cannot focus on them all.  You are going to have to choose. So chose the desires that make you burn the brightest. Follow your “ness” the part of you that only you bring to the world. Although we might be unique, just like everyone else, you are still your own brand of unique”ness”, Follow that!
